I just read Why I like atheists on the Crazy Mormon Lib blog. It’s nice to be seen as a human by a religious person, rather than being just another hell-bound heathen. I’m certainly mellowing out and becoming more tolerant. But there’s a grand lie being told: those of us without religion actually do want to be able to get to the point where we can tolerate religion. But we can’t, because religion isn’t just this thing people do. They seemingly have to force it onto others: on their children, on other people’s children, on the state and on society as a whole. They use slippery religious tricks to push it. When that stops, we can have all the peace, love and understanding we all want.
