The E-book drinking game. Most amusing.
London’s new Barclays-sponsored cycle hire scheme is getting culture jammed with stickers.
London Cycle Hire
Is today the high point of Boris Johnson’s term? I don’t know.
The cycle hire scheme seems an eminently sensible idea, although I’m not sure about the implementation. I don’t understand why a special cycle hire key is necessary rather than just using the Oyster card - the card we all now carry (that is, except me, ‘cos some bastard nicked mine). Alan reckons it has something to do with contractual issues. It’d certainly be interesting to find out why we can’t use our unified transport card for accessing cycle hire!
Will I use cycle hire? Maybe. I mostly travel by bus, and the economics of cycle hire don’t work out for me - the main journey I do in London (Strand to Russell Square) takes no time at all on the bus, and buses are cheap. I either get a paper travelcard or I use Oyster on the bus (1.20 each way). If one amortizes the cost of the key and access fees over the year, it is about the same as I put on Oyster for bus and tube journeys. That said, it is marginally more convenient as there are cycle pick-up points closer to the places I go.
